The MDDA welcomes Prof. R. Mahabeer as the Audit and Risk Committee Chairperson
The Board of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Rajesh Mahabeer as the Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) Chairperson for a three-year term effective from 03 October 2024. Professor Mahabeer’s wealth of knowledge, and his set of diverse skills will strengthen the agency’s Board in discharging its responsibilities towards achieving the MDDA mandate to promote media diversity through the growth of a sustainable community media sector in South Africa.
The Audit and Risk Committee’s purpose is to provide structured, systematic oversight of the organisation’s governance, risk management, and internal control practices. The committee assists the board and management by providing advice and guidance on the adequacy of the organisation’s value, ethics and governance structure.
Professor Mahabeer will fit well within his role as he has applied his vast experience in corporate governance, King IV, strategy, auditing, accounting, finance, ICT, IFRS, GRAP, taxation, legal, ethics, and human resources, amongst others, to the boards he serves. He has also held the position of Chief Financial Officer at Walter Sisulu University, Auditor General South Africa, and South African National Parks, which led to his nomination for the Best CFO in the Public Sector award in 2017 by CFO South Africa.
The MDDA Board Chairperson, Professor Hlengani Mathebula thanked the former ARC Chairperson, Ms D. Hlatshwayo, for her support, guidance and diligent service for the duration of her tenure and wished her well in her future endeavours.
In welcoming the incoming Audit and Risk Chairperson, Prof Mathebula stated, “The Board is eager to work with Prof Mahabeer, whose expertise will be crucial in strengthening risk management, internal controls, and financial oversight within the agency.”
Professor Mahabeer has joined the MDDA at the right time when the agency needs to improve its audit outcomes.
