Call for participants | Intelwatch investigative journalism safety training program
Strengthening the Human Rights Reporting Capacities and Safety of Journalists in Southern Africa
Intelwatch, in collaboration with leading international experts, is hosting a comprehensive safety training programme in Johannesburg. This four-day programme will take place within the timeframe of 30 March to 7 April 2025 and is tailored for journalists and editors working in seven selected countries in the SADC region.
Training Modules
The programme will cover the following critical areas:
- Hostile Environment and Awareness Training
- Cybersecurity
- Tackling Violence Against Women Journalists
- Handling Online Harassment
- Addressing Legal Harassment (e.g., SLAAP suits)
- Digital Forensics
- Legal Training on National, Regional, and African Union Redress and Legal Mechanisms
Selection Criteria
Participants must meet the following requirements:
- Be currently working as an investigative editor or reporter in one of these countries: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, or Mozambique.
- Focus on sensitive investigative topics such as corruption, human rights issues, environmental crime, gender-based violence, state misconduct, or LGBTQ+ issues.
- Have experienced threats to physical or psychological safety, cyberattacks, or harassment due to their work. Female journalists and editors who have faced gender-based harassment are especially encouraged to apply.
- Be available to travel to Johannesburg for four days and nights (all expenses paid) during the specified period.
