Their Peers Are Entering: Is Your Newsroom Ready for the Sikuvile Awards?
Dear editors and newsroom leaders,
On behalf of the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) secretariat, we wish to urge you to encourage your newsrooms to take full advantage of the extended deadline for submissions to the 2026 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards.
As you may be aware, SANEF has extended the submission deadline from 31 March 2026 to Wednesday, 15 April 2026, in recognition of the unforeseen challenges that may have prevented some journalists from entering their work on time. This extension is intended to ensure that no outstanding journalism is left unrecognised.
However, we have noted, with some concern, that the number of entries this year has been slower compared to previous years. Notably, several newsrooms that have historically submitted strong work have yet to enter any pieces. This presents both a risk of under-representation and a missed opportunity to showcase the depth of talent within those unrepresented newsrooms.
We therefore urge you, as editors and leaders, to ensure your newsroom is represented at the Sikuvile Awards. Encourage your journalists and subeditors to submit their work in the most suitable categories and offer your guidance in selecting their strongest pieces from the past year. Act now, your team’s participation and considered entries, whether investigative pieces, indigenous languages reporting, features, or impactful daily reporting, can make a decisive difference.
The Sikuvile Awards remain one of the country’s most respected platforms for recognising journalistic excellence, integrity, and courage. They are not only a celebration of individual achievement but also a reflection of the strength and standards of the newsroom behind the bylines.
Act now to motivate your teams to submit their entries before the deadline.
- Assist in identifying standout work worthy of recognition.
- Ensure your newsroom is represented alongside its peers.
This extended window offers a final opportunity to ensure that broadcasters and publications’ best work stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest journalism in the country.
